I am writing to raise an urgent concern regarding the unauthorised hanging of multiple Great Britain flags on public lampposts across Lower Farnham Road, North Lane, and A323 by McDonalds. There is also graffiti on the mini roundabout on Lower Farnham road.

These flags have been placed without permission and are giving the area an atmosphere of hostility and unrest. The excessive display is making residents, myself included, feel deeply uncomfortable, unsafe, and anxious, as though riots or disorder could break out again. There are groups on Facebook that are planning to put flags all over Aldershot, Ash and Farnham. One group is called Rushmoor People First and the operation is Raise the Colours.

This is not a harmless display of patriotism – the sheer scale and manner in which the flags have been put up conveys intimidation, creates division within the community, and undermines feelings of safety in public spaces. Such unauthorised use of public property should be treated as a serious matter.

I request that the Council take urgent action to:
1. Remove the flags immediately from lampposts and other public property.
2. Repaint the roundabout
3. Investigate how and by whom these were installed, as they appear coordinated and deliberate.
4. Ensure monitoring and enforcement so this behaviour is not repeated in the future.
5. I would also ask that this matter be referred to the Community Safety Team, given the potential for these displays to escalate community tensions and incite fear.-62 Lower Farnham Road, Aldershot, GU12 4EA

02/09/2025 13:56 In terms of the flags on posts and painted flags, this would need to be reported to Hampshire County Council as they are dealing with this type of enquiry. You can report this here https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/highways/report-a-problem/roads. I will also forward your report to the Community Safety team for their attention.
